# The IRS Identity Protection PIN: what it is and how to get one

## Quick answer
An IP PIN is a six-digit number from the IRS that stops anyone else from filing a tax return with
your Social Security number or ITIN. It's known only to you and the IRS, it's valid for **one calendar
year**, and you get a new one each year. You can get one through your [IRS online account](https://markpattyaccounting.com/resources/irs-online-account), by Form
15227, or in person.

## Why it's worth having
Tax identity theft happens when someone files a return in your name to claim a refund. With an IP
PIN on your account, a return without the correct PIN won't be accepted as yours.

## How to get one
| Method | Who can use it | When you get the PIN |
|---|---|---|
| Online, in the IP PIN section of your IRS online account (the fastest way) | Anyone who can verify their identity online | Shown in your online account |
| Form 15227 (online application, then a phone call to verify you) | People who can't verify online and whose adjusted gross income on their last return was below $84,000 (individuals) or $168,000 (married filing jointly) | By mail, usually within 4 to 6 weeks, then by mail each year |
| In person at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (appointment) | People who can't use the other two methods | By mail, usually within about 3 weeks, then by mail each year |

To use the online option you need an IRS online account, which you sign in to with ID.me. If you don't have one yet, follow our step-by-step guide. → [How to set up your IRS online account](https://markpattyaccounting.com/resources/irs-online-account)

## Using your IP PIN
- Give it to us (or enter it in your software) when your return is prepared.
- Use the current year's PIN. An old PIN won't work.
- Parents and legal guardians can also request an IP PIN for their dependents.
- Never give your IP PIN to anyone who calls or emails claiming to be the IRS. The IRS won't ask for it.
